Why Test Your Genes

Your genes determine your health potential by managing your body’s chemistry. We can use nutrition to ‘switch-off’ unwanted genes and ‘switch-on’ beneficial genes. As in, tell the body to ignore instructions for harm, and obey the instructions for health.

Everything, to put it simply.

Your nutrient needs, your gut health, your energy levels and mood, your weight, your hormone health, your food choices and habits.

How Do I Test My Genes

It’s as easy as 1,2,3.

Take a test: A convenient home DNA finger-prick kit will be delivered to your door. The process is quick and simple, taking just a few minutes to complete.

Send the test to the lab: After you’ve collected your sample, a courier will pick up your kit. Your sample will be processed at the lab, usually within 3 weeks.

Receive your DNA report: You’ll receive a summary PDF report via email before your 30-minutes online consultation with Dietitian Nutritionist, Stephanie Rouillard.

Got questions about genetic testing?

  • The total cost is R6 500. The genetic testing package includes:

    • Your genetic report as produced by the lab for your records.

    • A +-3-page summary PDF genetic report, emailed to you prior to the feedback consultation.

    • A 30-minute clarification chat (performed online) with Dietitian Nutritionist, Stephanie Rouillard

  • The genetic test summary report provides insights into various aspects of your health and nutrition. The summary PDF report will cover risk scores and recommendations for:

    • Brain health (how your genes affect your mood and cognition)

    • Heart health (likelihood of having problems with cholesterol or damage to your blood vessels)

    • Blood sugar control (chance of your body having trouble managing sugar levels)

    • Weight and eating habits (if you're more likely to gain weight or have certain food cravings)

    • Food sensitivities (if you're more likely to have trouble with gluten, dairy, salt or caffeine)

    • Bone health (if you're at higher risk for weak bones)

    • Inflammation in your body (both throughout your body and in your gut)

    • Aging process (how likely you are to experience faster aging or cell damage over time)

For those interested in the scientific aspects, the lab test examines key biological processes such as methylation, oxidative stress, detoxification, inflammation, insulin sensitivity, and lipid metabolism. This analysis allows for the indicative risk scores for the health areas listed above. Please note, this genetic test is not diagnostic, but rather indicative, allowing for tailored dietary recommendations and preventive measures based on your unique genetic profile.

  • The R6 250 fee covers the cost of the DNA kit and includes the following:

    • A summary (+-3 page) PDF report summarising key findings, including:

      • Indicators of potential risk areas for brain health, heart health, blood sugar levels, inflammation, aging potential, gut health, weight management, and bone and soft tissue health

      • A list of key dietary changes (daily and weekly) to address high and moderate risk areas

      • A list of supplement considerations (specific brands and dosages to be provided during the 30-minute online session)

      • A list of blood marker considerations (to be finalised during the 30-minute online session)

    • A 30-minute consultation where we'll:

      • Finalise recommended supplement considerations (including dosages and specific brands)

      • Assist with practical implementation of dietary changes, including:

        • Alternative options for foods highlighted in the PDF report, based on your dietary aversions or preferences

    Biomarker Feedback & Tracking:

Biomarkers are measurable indicators found in the body — such as in blood — that can provide valuable insights into various aspects of your health. While these markers help track progress in key health areas like inflammation, nutrient levels, or metabolic function, they are not diagnostic tools and should not replace medical screenings. Instead, they serve as helpful data points to monitor your health status over time.

  • DNA is collected via a pain-free ‘finger prick test’. It takes approximately 2 minutes to collect the sample.

  • Every gene has been selected based on 2 factors: scientific validity and actionability. The genes in the genetic reports are selected from peer-reviewed scientific publications. To ascertain scientific validity, it is ensured that there is adequate research to understand what the gene does and how the version of the gene you possess affects your body. Every gene in reports have been hand-picked because there is a documented action that healthcare practitioners can recommend to reduce your risk and improve your health.

  • Unfortunately, health insurance companies do not cover the cost of the genetic test package.

  • Genetic methylation testing focuses on one specific pathway—how methyl groups are added to your DNA and how this affects your health. A comprehensive nutrigenomic test, on the other hand, looks at a broader range of genetic factors, giving you a more complete picture of your health.

  • Yes, Cape Town has several healthcare providers who offer genetic methylation testing. You can easily book a consultation and get started on your journey to better health.
